The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, following his victory at the election tribunal, which upheld his win in the September 2024 governorship election.
In a statement released on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike lauded the tribunal’s ruling as a clear confirmation of the mandate given to Okpebholo by the people of Edo State. He encouraged the governor to stay focused on governance and not be distracted by those seeking to seize power “through the back door.”
“The victory is for the people of Edo State who overwhelmingly elected Governor Okpebholo,” Wike emphasized, urging the governor to maintain his commitment to serving the public. He also expressed strong confidence in Okpebholo’s leadership, stating, “I believe in him, and with the way he has started, I am confident that his government will positively impact Edo State and its people.”
The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, delivered a unanimous judgment on Wednesday, affirming Okpebholo as the legitimate winner of the September 2, 2024, election. The three-member panel, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, dismissed the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Asuerime Ighodalo, for lack of evidence to support claims of over-voting. The tribunal confirmed that Okpebholo had garnered the highest number of valid votes in the election.
Wike’s statement highlights his belief that Okpebholo’s leadership will continue to bring positive changes to Edo State, reinforcing his support for the governor’s agenda moving forward.
