Liverpool’s 1-0 triumph over PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday has sparked a shift in Rio Ferdinand’s predictions about how far the Reds can go this season. Alisson Becker’s outstanding performance played a pivotal role in securing the win, with Liverpool now in a strong position to reach the quarter-finals as they continue their pursuit of a seventh European title.
Despite Jamie Carragher’s doubts about Liverpool’s ability to lift the trophy this season, there’s no denying that the Reds have firmly established themselves as serious contenders following an impressive group stage. However, Ferdinand, once a vocal supporter of Liverpool as the Champions League favorites, has changed his tune.
Earlier in the season, the former Manchester United defender tipped Liverpool to claim the prestigious title. Now, however, Ferdinand believes Real Madrid will ultimately come out on top in the competition, predicting that Liverpool will be eliminated in the semi-finals.
Why the Change in Mindset?
Ferdinand’s shift in perspective may stem from Liverpool’s challenging route to the final. Despite their 1-0 win over PSG in the first leg, the Reds face numerous obstacles ahead, including potential matchups against heavyweights like Aston Villa in the quarter-finals, and a likely clash with Real Madrid in the semis. While Liverpool triumphed over Madrid in the group stage, the Spanish giants have since found their rhythm, with Kylian Mbappé’s exceptional form at the Bernabeu solidifying his Ballon d’Or candidacy.
Should Liverpool advance to the final, they’ll likely face another formidable opponent, such as Bayern Munich or Barcelona, both of whom are also in top form.
While Ferdinand acknowledges that Liverpool still have a shot at glory, his prediction reflects the tough road ahead for Jürgen Klopp’s side. Liverpool remain a force to be reckoned with, but at this stage, they may no longer be considered the clear favorites to lift the Champions League trophy.
