Political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has boldly vowed to dismantle the Obidient movement, citing personal threats and a falling out with Peter Obi as the primary reasons behind his decision. Speaking on Breakfast Central on Thursday, Omokri dismissed accusations that his opposition to Obi and his supporters was motivated by a personal vendetta. Instead, he highlighted his pivotal role in Obi’s rise to political prominence and how his disillusionment with both Obi and his supporters led to his current stance.
“I took a vow to destroy that movement because Peter Obi was a project of mine,” Omokri declared, reflecting on his efforts to shape Obi’s national profile. He revealed that, along with Senator Ben Murray-Bruce and a former president, he played a key role in securing Obi’s position as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election. “I was responsible for Peter Obi becoming the running mate to Waziri Atiku Abubakar in 2019,” Omokri claimed, emphasizing that he had the records to back up his involvement.
While the initial fallout occurred after Obi’s unexpected departure from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Omokri pointed to the behavior of Obi’s supporters, the Obidients, as the true turning point. “Peter Obi’s movement, Obidients, started attacking me, threatening me, insulting me. That was OK. But then they moved from myself to my family,” Omokri revealed, describing the escalation of harassment, including multiple death threats.
He recounted the chilling experience of his wife and himself being trailed during a jog in the United Kingdom, with the threats intensifying as the Obidients allegedly learned his routine and pursued him with intimidation. “They came to my house in the UK. They trailed my wife and me when we were jogging. They found out my jogging route and pursued me, threatening me,” Omokri shared.
Feeling helpless, Omokri reached out to Peter Obi, hoping for support and intervention. However, he claimed that Obi refused to denounce an individual allegedly linked to the threats against him. Disillusioned by what he saw as abandonment, Omokri made the decision to turn his political efforts against Obi and his movement. “I had to deploy whatever political machinery I have to destroy that movement,” he stated firmly.
Omokri’s vow to dismantle the Obidient movement signals an escalation in the ongoing political tensions, with personal grievances now intertwined with his political agenda. This marks a significant development in Nigeria’s already complex political landscape.
