The Ondo State Police Command has issued a firm warning against a planned protest by the Take It Back Movement, urging citizens to avoid participation due to potential security risks.
In a statement released Monday in Akure, the state capital, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ayanlade Olushola, acknowledged citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful protest but emphasized that intelligence reports suggest the demonstration could be hijacked by “unscrupulous elements”.
“While we respect the right to free expression and peaceful assembly, our duty to maintain peace and security must come first,” Olushola stated.
The police fear that the protest could lead to a breakdown of law and order, threatening the relative calm currently enjoyed across the state.
Police Ramp Up Security Measures
The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, has ordered all area commanders, tactical units, and divisional police officers to intensify patrols and deploy personnel across strategic locations, including public spaces and critical infrastructure.
“We’re not against dialogue, but street protests in this volatile atmosphere could heighten tensions,” the statement read.
Authorities say the precautionary move is part of a broader strategy to safeguard lives and property while avoiding unnecessary confrontations.
A Call for Calm
Residents have been advised to go about their daily activities without fear, as adequate security arrangements are in place. Parents and guardians are specifically urged to discourage their children from joining any unrest.
The police also encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity to the nearest station or security outpost.
“We remain committed to protecting your rights and freedoms, peacefully and securely,” the command assured.
