In a powerful and emotional message marking World Health Day 2025, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for immediate and sustained efforts to reduce maternal and newborn deaths across the country.
Speaking through a statement released Monday by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady emphasized that far too many women and newborns are still dying from preventable complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period, a crisis she says must end.
“No mother should have to risk her life to bring a child into the world, and no newborn should be denied a fair chance at survival,” she said.
This year’s World Health Day, themed “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” shines a spotlight on the urgent need to invest in maternal and child health, an issue Senator Tinubu insists is not only a moral duty, but a critical pillar of sustainable development.
“Investing in maternal and newborn health is not only a moral responsibility but also a fundamental cornerstone of sustainable development,” she noted.
Saluting Nigeria’s Healthcare Heroes
In addition to her advocacy for better maternal outcomes, the First Lady also extended heartfelt appreciation to health workers across Nigeria for their relentless service, especially those working in difficult and under-resourced environments.
“On this World Health Day, let us all strive to create a world where mothers can safely give birth and children can live healthy to reach their full potential,” she urged.
Why This Matters
Despite advances in global health, Nigeria still battles high maternal and infant mortality rates, often due to poor access to quality healthcare, lack of skilled birth attendants, and insufficient health infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.
Senator Tinubu’s remarks arrive at a time when global health advocates are ramping up pressure on governments to prioritize maternal and child health in their national policies.
