Nigeria’s Oil Output Drops to 1.4mbpd in March, Still Leads Africa in Production
Nigeria’s crude oil production fell to 1.4 million barrels per day (mbpd) in March 2025, down from 1.46mbpd in February. This is according to the latest Monthly Oil Market Report (MOMR) released by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on April 14, 2025.
Despite the decline, Nigeria remained the top oil producer in Africa, ahead of Algeria, which produced 909,000 bpd, and Congo, which recorded 263,000 bpd.
The report, based on direct communication with member countries, showed Nigeria’s strong position in Africa’s oil sector. OPEC also shared figures from secondary sources, which showed Nigeria’s output at 1.51mbpd in March, slightly lower than 1.54mbpd in February.
OPEC said total crude oil production from member countries under the Declaration of Cooperation (DoC) averaged 41.02mbpd in March, showing a small drop of 37,000 bpd compared to the previous month.
On April 12, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) confirmed the country’s oil production for March at 1,400,783 bpd. The commission noted that this is about 93% of Nigeria’s 1.5mbpd quota set by OPEC.
Earlier this month, on April 4, OPEC and its allies (OPEC+) agreed to increase total oil production by 411,000 bpd starting in May. This decision comes amid falling global oil prices, which could impact Nigeria’s ability to meet its 2025 budget expectations.
