Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has asked President Bola Tinubu to end his trip to France and return home immediately.
In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) page, Obi said the President needs to address the growing security crisis in Nigeria. He warned that the ongoing violence and killings across the country are getting worse and require urgent attention.
According to Obi, over 150 Nigerians have died in the past two weeks due to insecurity, especially in Plateau and Zamfara States.
This is not the time for a retreat abroad. The country is in pain. Nigerians are being killed daily, Obi said.
Obi also mentioned other issues affecting the country, including pipeline explosions in the Niger Delta and the return of insurgent attacks in Borno State. He said both civilians and soldiers are being killed in many parts of Nigeria.
He added that kidnappings and killings are still happening in the Southeast.
The CEO of the troubled company called Nigeria is retreating to a faraway land. This is not acceptable, Obi said.
The statement comes after the Presidency claimed Tinubu’s trip to France was for official work, not medical treatment. This was in response to claims by activist Omoyele Sowore that the trip was health-related.
Presidential aide Daniel Bwala said on Channels TV that Tinubu’s visit was a working trip. Spokesman Bayo Onanuga also confirmed that the President left Nigeria on April 2 and is expected to return in about two weeks.
But Obi believes Tinubu’s absence sends the wrong message.
Mr. President, please suspend your activities in France and return home now. Nigeria needs you. The new Nigeria we dream of requires leadership and responsibility, he said.
