Nigeria Invited to Host G20 Event as Trump Threatens to Boycott South Africa Summit
South Africa has officially invited Nigeria to host a G20 event in Abuja, the country’s capital. This offer shows growing cooperation between Africa’s two biggest economies.
The invitation was made by South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola to his Nigerian counterpart, according to Africa Intelligence. It comes as South Africa prepares to host the main G20 Summit in Johannesburg this November.
Nigeria’s Biggest Role Yet in the G20
This will be Nigeria’s most active involvement in the G20 so far. The country has never been a permanent member but has joined past summits as a guest. Nigeria took part during India’s presidency in 2023 and also under former President Muhammadu Buhari through the G20 Compact with Africa.
Now, with the African Union becoming a permanent member of the G20, Nigeria’s role could grow even more.
Focus Areas for the 2025 G20 Summit
South Africa took over the G20 presidency in December 2024. The main themes for this year’s summit include:
- Digital public infrastructure (DPI)
- Artificial intelligence (AI)
- Global cooperation during economic and political changes
Trump Attacks South Africa and Plans to Skip G20
Former U.S. President Donald Trump says he may boycott the summit. He accused South Africa of taking land from white farmers and claimed they are being attacked.
They are taking the land of white farmers. And then killing them and their families. The media refuses to report on this, Trump posted on Truth Social.
Trump also said the U.S. has stopped giving aid to South Africa. He questioned whether America should attend the summit in a country he calls unsafe.
Earlier this year, Trump’s administration expelled South Africa’s ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, over similar complaints.
South Africa Responds to Trump’s Comments
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesperson said they are no longer expecting Trump at the summit. The government denied Trump’s claims and accused him of trying to avoid criticism from world leaders.
The ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), said Trump’s statements were meant to distract from his own political problems in the U.S.
Africa’s Growing Role on the Global Stage
The G20 Summit in 2025 could be a turning point for Africa. With South Africa leading the group this year and Nigeria possibly hosting a major event, African voices are becoming more important in global decisions.
The continent is ready to shape discussions on technology, economy, and development, despite rising political tensions.
