In a groundbreaking operation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted a massive 125,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in Kebbi State. This significant bust, part of the ongoing Operation Whirlwind, marks the largest fuel seizure recorded under the initiative.
The operation, executed with precision, disrupted an extensive smuggling ring that was attempting to move the stolen fuel across the border. During a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, ACG Hissaini Ejibunu, expressed the gravity of fuel smuggling, calling it a severe economic threat. He highlighted how such illicit activities contribute to major revenue losses, fuel shortages, and pose serious security risks to the nation.
According to Ejibunu, the interception of three Scania trucks loaded with fuel in Tsamiya was a direct result of crucial intelligence gathered by Customs officers. The seized fuel, which was stored in 4,375 jerrycans (25 litres each) and 54 drums (200 litres each), had a Duty Paid Value of ₦125 million. The trucks involved in the smuggling were registered in the Republic of Benin, and their movements had been under close surveillance prior to the intervention.
In addition to the success in Tsamiya, more fuel was seized in key smuggling hotspots, including Dolekeina, Zaria Kalakala, Tunga Waterside, and Lolo Tsamiya. The collaborative efforts between the NCS, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) were credited as essential in disrupting the operation and bringing the perpetrators to a halt.
In his remarks, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, represented by ACG Ejibunu, commended the officers’ vigilance and praised the significant role of National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu in supporting the fight against economic crimes. Adeniyi urged Nigerians to continue supporting the Customs in their battle against smuggling by reporting suspicious activities.
Reaffirming the NCS’s commitment, the Customs Area Controller for Kebbi Command, Compt. Chidi Chukwumeziri Nwokorie, confirmed that the crackdown on smuggling will continue with even greater intensity. He reassured legitimate traders that the NCS is dedicated to ensuring smooth, lawful trade, while strictly enforcing compliance with national regulations.
This successful operation is a testament to the strength of inter-agency collaboration in tackling smuggling and protecting Nigeria’s economic interests.
