The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has completed a significant renovation project at the drug rehabilitation center located within the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano State. This initiative is a crucial part of ECOWAS’s ongoing commitment to improving the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals battling drug use disorders across the region.
On Thursday, March 27, 2025, a formal handover ceremony took place, marking the successful completion of the project. Dr. Daniel Amankwaah, Principal Programme Officer for ECOWAS’s Drug Prevention and Control Division, presented the keys to Prof. Abdulrahman Abba Sheshe, the Chief Medical Director of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, signaling a new era for the facility.
One of the standout features of the renovation is the expansion of the Data Ward for Occupational Therapy, enhancing the hospital’s ability to cater to individuals undergoing rehabilitation. This vital upgrade aims to improve patient care and treatment outcomes for those recovering from substance use disorders.
Since March 25, ECOWAS has been actively engaged in Kano, as part of its broader mission to strengthen drug rehabilitation services throughout West Africa. In addition to the facility’s physical upgrade, ECOWAS also organized an advocacy meeting with local stakeholders, aimed at raising awareness and fostering collaboration to combat drug abuse in the region.
ECOWAS’s continued support for member states in tackling drug use disorders is a testament to its dedication to creating a healthier, more resilient West Africa. With the renovations now complete, the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital is better equipped to provide high-quality care and rehabilitation services to those in need.
